K9 University Newsletter
Volume 1, Issue 2
August, 2007

Welcome to the August 2007 edition of the K9 University Newsletter! We are in the Dog Days of summer which is prime time for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Please be sure to protect your pets and keep current on their heartworm and flea & tick preventatives. Your comments about last month's newsletter were greatly appreciated. If there is anything that you think we should do to improve for you and your dog, please let us know.

Labor Day Boarding

We are surprised and thrilled about how quickly spots are going for Labor Day Boarding this year. Everyone is getting out of town! There is still plenty of space available, but please be sure to let us know of your plans as soon as you can. If you are interested in reserving boarding online, please click this link to reserve your boarding today.

P.A.W.S. Run For Their Lives

Once again, K9 University is participating in the P.A.W.S. Run For Their Lives. On September 30th, this annual event will kick off at 9:00 AM in Lincoln Park. "Support PAWS Chicago's mission to build a No Kill city by running or walking for homeless animals. Bring the whole family to participate in the child and pet-friendly 4K Walk, or compete against the clock in the 8K Run." Click Here for P.A.W.S Run For Their Lives 2007. We would certainly appreciate it if you can volunteer to assist Sharon with the agility course and Joan with Canine Good Citizenship testing. Please let Joan, Sharon or Ruby know if you can help us to help this worthy cause.

Please Support K9 University with Your Votes

It's that time of year again! Click Here to vote for K9 University in the the Chicagoland Tails Best of 2007 Readers' Choice Awards. Plus, four lucky participants will win cool prizes - click the link above before the survey ends September 17 and help us win again. Thanks!!

August Dog Care Tips

As temperatures climb into the 90s and the humidity is up, you must be sensitive to your pets needs. Heat can be very dangerous to dogs - just imagine if you had to walk around in your winter parka!

Never leave your dogs in the car, even with the windows cracked. In just a few minutes, temperatures can soar over 125 degrees. Heat stroke can quickly take over and there are too many tragic stories every summer. If you have a long-haired breed, you might consider shearing them. This will help them to stay cool during the blistering heat.
Keep plenty of fresh water available. Remember that dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet, so once they get heated up it is difficult for them to cool down. Make sure that they have plenty of shade and when it is very hot, bring them inside and even into the basement where it is cool.

If your dog does get overheated, wet them thoroughly with cool (not cold) water and get them in front of a fan. If they have thick sticky saliva, appear dizzy, vomit or have diarrhea, they may be suffering from heat stroke. Take them to the vet as soon as possible.

August Adoption Update

Every month we have a number of fine dogs available for adoption through our friends and partners. Just last week we adopted out one of our greyhounds. If you are interested in opening your heart and home to a dog that needs your love, please call Ruby at (773) 533-5959.

August Family News Update

Congratulations to Laura Zaragosa, our front office employee, on the birth of her baby boy Adrian. Mother and son are doing well and we are so happy for them both.

Kudos are in order for the excellent performances from our agility students Ann Eaton, Robin Berg and Melanie Herbst! At the July agility trials, Ann received her NAJP title with her Rottweiler, Bauer. Robin finished in first place in the NADAC Jumpers Novice class with the "almighty" Pug, Bruce. Our agility instructor Sharon Cerniak finished in second place in Novice Tunnelers and fourth place in Novice Jumpers with her Rottweiler Josie on their firs showing together. She also finished first place in her Open Regular Class with her Rottweiler Havoc and received a qualifying score in Novice Tunnelers. Good Work Everyone!!

If you have any news about your family that you would like us to post (new puppy, awards or achievements or whatever) please send a note to webmaster (at) k9uchicago and we will include it next month.
